What was life like in Sunderland in 1869?

A wonderful letter from M.M.T. to her son (?) Henry, tells news of the town describing the cold weather that winter, the demise of "Uncle Rees" in a riding accident in town, selling eggs, and other tidbits. The letter is transcribed ***here***.

Can anyone figure out who M.M.T. and Henry are?

Thanks go to Barbara Ray of Martinez, CA for making this letter available.

This narrative history of the town of Sunderland describes many details of the houses and other buildings along Main Street. The tour starts from town hall, travels south to the Riverside cemetery, then returns north along Main Street up to Williams' Farm, and finally returns to town hall. This text could be used for a self-guided walking tour of the town. It covers about one mile of Main Street (two miles round trip). Visiting Riverside Cemetery adds another half mile.

Reprinted editions of The History of the Town of Sunderland are available for purchase from the town clerk. Both volumes contain extensive photographs and genealogies.
Volume I -- 1673-1899 by John Montague Smith (1899), $60
Volume II -- 1899-1954 compiled by Hubbard, Warner, & Toczydlowski (1954), $40
