Board of Assessors

The Assessors' function is to ensure full and fair market value of all real and personal property in the Town of Sunderland.  The Assessors are agents of the Commissioner of Revenue.

The Mass. Department of Revenue has granted preliminary certification of Sunderland’s property values for Fiscal Year 2014. FY2014’s proposed values are changed only slightly from the FY13 values, with the general trend being that land is valued slightly lower than it was previously. Towns are required to update property values periodically so that tax assessments reflect market values and the slower real estate market activity in recent years.

These proposed FY2014 values will be available for review by the public over the next two weeks, November 4-16, 2013 at the Town Office Building and Sunderland Public Library. The Town Office Building is open Mon-Wed, 8:00 am-4:00 pm, Thurs. 8:00 am-12:00 noon, and Monday evenings 6:00-8:00 pm (except for Monday, Nov. 11, closed all day and evening for Veteran’s Day). The Library is open Mon., 10:00 am – 8:00 pm, Tues.-Wed., 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Fri., 10:00 am – 7:00 pm and Sat., 10:00 am-5:00 pm. General information will be available with the proposed values and property owners may also visit the Assessors’ office during their regular business hours (Mondays, 12:00 noon – 8:00 pm and Tuesdays 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm).

This is a good opportunity to check your property’s description and proposed value and corrections can be made before the bills are issued. Following this public review, the FY2014 taxable values will be finalized. Tax bills will be mailed out in late December, for payment by April 1, 2014.
